Carles Gil Ready To Help Revolution Win After Fourth MLS All-Star Appearance
"It’s a pleasure to be here, but in the end, what I want is to win with my team, and it’s a key game for us.”
Carles Gil is shifting his focus back to the New England Revolution after helping MLS defeat LIGA MX in the All-Star Game on Wednesday night.
Gil played the final 30 minutes of the summertime showcase, which ended in a 3-1 win for MLS.
He helped set up the third goal by deceiving a pair of defenders and finding Cristian Espinoza. Two passes later, Brian White put the ball in the net.
Alex Freeman enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside Gil, especially after their clubs battled over the weekend.
“Just him as a player, he’s very dangerous,” Freeman said. “It’s an honor to play with a guy like that, who is very well-respected in this league.”
Gil enjoyed being an All-Star for the fourth time, but he’s also ready to rejoin the Revs, who play CF Montreal on Friday.
The midfielder expects to play.
“Yeah, for sure, 100%,” Gil said. “Really, we need to be [at the All-Star Game]. It’s the league who decides. It’s a pleasure to be here, but in the end, what I want is to win with my team, and it’s a key game for us.”
Wednesday’s match was a throwback of sorts, as Gil wore the number 22, just like he did at Valencia and when he first joined the Revolution. The Designated Player switched to 10 when Teal Bunbury left.
“I remember good moments from those years,” Gil said.
Gil has accomplished a great deal during his time in New England, already holding the record for the most assists in club history. He is the only Revs player to record double-digit assists in four straight seasons.
Gil will soon set another record, as he is two goal contributions away from tying Taylor Twellman’s club record.
“If that happened, it’d be a pleasure, for sure,” Gil said. “Taylor is a big legend. He did everything in our club.”
Gil noted that he would’ve loved to play with Twellman, who retired in 2010 due to concussion-related symptoms. It’s a partnership that many Revs fans would’ve enjoyed.
“Spectacular striker, MVP, many times in the best XI, Golden Boot. I think these types of awards speak of him,” Gil said.
While the on-field action is most critical for Gil and the Revolution as they look to make a late playoff push, the Spaniard also has to complete his end of a bet he made with Cristiano Oliveira.
The 17-year-old is owed a steak after scoring in the MLS NEXT All-Star Game.
“We have, after Montreal, some days off, so I think it’s going to happen then,” Gil said.
