Carles Gil Optimsitic That 2025 "Can Be A Good Season” For The Revolution
“We are not in the position we want, but the feeling is different. We are competing in every game, and we feel we are there."
While recent results haven’t gone the New England Revolution's way, Carles Gil remains optimistic.
The Revs, who started the season 1-4-1, had a nine-game unbeaten streak (5-0-4) that helped them get into playoff contention. They have since gone 0-4-2, with their last win coming on May 31.
The club, which is four points below the red line, has been competitive throughout the season, having recorded only one multi-goal loss. Last year, they had 15 multi-goal defeats.
“I think this season is different, even though we are not in the position we want,” Gil said. “But, the feeling is different, we are competing every game, and we feel we are there. Obviously, we need to improve and start to win games. But I think it can be a good season.”
Gil would like to see the team get better without the ball, noting, “We cannot concede every game. We didn’t in the last game, but the other two or three games, because then it’s difficult to have a win.”
Offensively, he’s encouraged by recent performances, though the Revs need to do a better job of putting the ball into the back of the net.
“The key is to create chances in the end,” Gil said. “Then, the finishing is apart. But, the difficult thing on the pitch is creating chances. We are creating big chances, and I think the goals are coming, for sure.”
Captain Gil understands the reality of the Revs’ current situation, stating, “The truth is that I think in the last 11 [games], we just have one win. So, I think it’s true that we are [playing] good games but in the end, we need to improve. We need to improve in the boxes, finishing.”
Still, the MLS All-Star gets the same feeling every time he wears Revolution colors.
“In the moment when I’m on the pitch, or the moments before the game, I’m always having good feelings like, ‘Today’s the day we are going to win,’” Gil said. “Even on the pitch, I’m feeling good, having chances, it’s coming, it’s coming.”
The MLS playoff system rewards those who play their best soccer at the end of the season. The Revs, who have made it to five MLS Cups without lifting the ultimate prize, know this better than anyone.
Gil believes that this year’s team can be challenging to play in the postseason if they make it and continue to improve.
“It’s 13 more games,” Gil said. “We want to be in the playoffs and then, I’m sure that in the playoffs, we are ready to face any team.”
