Carles Gil Looking to Lead New England Revolution Out of Early Season Woes
“[Carles] is one of the best teammates that I’ve had, seriously. His energy, attitude, everything. He’s amazing.”
Being the captain is not an easy job and that is especially the case for Carles Gil in 2025. The New England Revolution are one of the worst teams in Major League Soccer and the Spanish midfielder is tasked with getting New England back on track.
Gil is not only the captain of the squad, he still remains the best player on the roster. He is the heartbeat of the Revolution and without him the Revs look like a completely different team.
With New England failing to have tallied a goal or three points so far, the season hasn’t treated Gil well. He is struggling to set up his opponents for scoring chances and even when he does the Revolution are unable to convert.
And as
noted, Gil is the most fouled player in MLS.”“I’ve said many times that I want to be the best Carles for this group, for this New England [team], on the pitch and outside it,” New England’s captain said. “I try to help everyone. Obviously, you can see on the pitch that we’re in a tough moment, also mentally. You can see the team, me also, not just when we concede a goal but when we miss a chance, we concede even a corner, everyone has some doubts. It’s normal when you have difficult moments. I’m trying to be a leader in all senses. Not just me, but the experienced guys [also], to help the team.”
Part of the role as a captain is making sure that new players feel a part of the overall group and helping to build chemistry on and off the pitch. Caleb Porter told reporters during his media availability on Friday that Gil had organized a player dinner in Boston the night prior.
It is clear that Gil is making an impact on the locker room. For Aljaz Ivacic, he is the best teammate that he has ever had.
“His energy, attitude, everything,” the goalkeeper said. “He’s amazing.”
New England’s head coach also discussed howgreat of a relationship he has with Gil.
“Carles and I have a great relationship,” Porter said. “We’re very much aligned. He likes what we’re doing. He likes the direction we’re heading. He doesn’t like the results, but we’re in the same boat with that. So, when we sit and talk, and we talk about the state of where everything is at, we are, on one hand, frustrated with the lack of results. In some cases, we see exactly the same thing and we know what we need to do to change it. So, we’re on the same page, along with Curt [Onalfo]. We’re all aligned on that. We’re all, I think, disappointed and in some cases surprised with the first four games, that we haven’t scored more goals and we haven’t gotten results. But in the end, we can’t sit there and feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve just got to keep going and keep plugging away. We do believe in what we’re doing and the process that we’re taking.”
If New England is going to get its first win of the season, Gil will play a major role. The fact that the team hasn’t descended into chaos after such a poor start is a testament to his leadership abilities.
But the clock keeps on ticking and Gil isn’t getting any younger. At 32 years old, the chance to win a championship is running out.
Add in the fact that his deal expires next season; if the midfielder can’t win a championship with the Revolution, he will be forced to look elsewhere. As much as New England needs a win to convince fans that they can actually turn things around, the Revs will also be looking to prove to their captain that they can potentially contend in the Eastern Conference.
Carles deserves a coach with a plan, a clue. The results this season have been utterly predictable. You don't toss out players left, right, and in between and hope to rebuild in no time at all. Porter is so inept.
