Carles Gil Continues To Make Revs History
Gil now holds the record for most regular-season assists in Revs history.
Carles Gil once again etched his name in the history books when he collected his 74th MLS assist, pushing him ahead of Steve Ralston for most regular-season helpers by a New England Revolution player.
The moment came in the 48th minute of Saturday’s 2-0 win over New York City FC. Gil found Ignatius Ganago, who scored his first goal of the season.
Head coach Caleb Porter called Gil “one of the best players in the league."
“As far as a pure chance creator or assist guy, he's the best guy I've coached,” Porter said. “I've had some good players that produce goals in that spot at the 10. But in terms of a setup guy, he's the best guy that I've had. I've had [Lucas] Zelarayán and [Diego] Valeri, some really, really good players in that spot.
“But [Gil is] a great pro and a great guy, and you just see how hard he works. It's very rare in our league to have a guy like him that has so much quality, but is so humble and defends like he defends. Just a great player and a great person.”
Matt Polster also spoke positively of Gil, stating that it’s “probably the most fun I’ve played with somebody in soccer.” The two have worked together since midway through 2020.
“I love playing with him,” Polster said. “I think he’s a fantastic person and player. For him to show his quality every single game—and you can see how hard he works on both sides of the ball—that’s the kind of person and player he is.”
Gil arrived at the Revolution in 2019 after stints with Valencia, Elche, Aston Villa, and Deportivo La Coruna.
During his time in MLS, he’s been named the league’s Newcomer of the Year (2019) and MVP (2021). He is a two-time MLS Best XI selection and three-time MLS All-Star.
While Gil has meant a lot to the club, the player also has great appreciation for the organization.
“Since I arrived here, I felt confidence from everyone,” Gil said. “I arrived during a moment that wasn’t a good moment for me. Like I said, they gave me all the confidence. Starting with the owners, the fans, my teammates.
“I’m very happy here. I want to continue winning games. We had a very difficult year last season. We started the season bad, but we’re winning games right now and I want to continue like this.”
I can't imagine this team without Gil.
