BOS Nation FC Revisiting Name
“Your voices have made it clear that revisiting our team name is essential"
BOS Nation FC provided an update after collecting fan feedback over the past month.
The team requested the public’s opinions after receiving criticism over its rollout campaign and has since held meetings with supporters, athletes, advocacy organizations, and other community members. The commentary will be taken into account as the club builds its identity. BOS Nation FC also arranged a listening session with Boston and New England’s women’s professional teams in an effort to develop collaboration within that community.
After the extensive backlash of the club’s “Too Many Balls” campaign and the subsequent apology, fans continued to push the team to change the name.
“Your voices have made it clear that revisiting our team name is essential, and we’re fully committed to building a club identity that reflects the ambition of a women’s professional soccer team in Boston,” said BNFC’s controlling owner Jennifer Epstein.
The team compiled a document with some responses from the survey and highlighted recurring themes.
As expected, there was strong opposition regarding the team name. Several people said “BOS Nation FC” lacked creativity and reminded them of bro culture. Others said the name is not meaningful and does not reflect women’s sports or Boston’s history and diversity.
“A professional women’s soccer team should have a name that celebrates women and reflects their values, not something that panders to men or feels disconnected from the sport,” said one comment.
Many of the responses expressed disappointment combined with a desire to support the club and urged the team to reconsider its branding. Inclusivity, boldness, and integrity were among the values fans believed the team should embody.
Supporters also emphasized the importance of transparency and more community involvement as the BOS Nation identity develops. The club will continue to speak with fans and advisors over the coming weeks and promised to share any updates.
The feedback survey will be available until January 5, 2025.
I am still baffled by how this messed this up so badly
